What's it all about?
Beautiful is the Tony Award-winning smash-hit Broadway musical that tells the true story of Carole King’s journey from schoolgirl to superstar. It traces her relationship with her husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin, their close friendship and playful rivalry with fellow song-writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and her remarkable rise to stardom.
Beautifully staged, the show features a uniformly excellent cast of actor / singers who rise to the challenge of executing King’s timelessly brilliant songs just as well as their Sixties forebears did. If you're over 45 you’ll recognise every single song instantly, and if you aren’t, get ready to enter an Aladdin’s cave of glittering musical jewels.
It’s a particular pleasure to watch the songs develop from early piano or guitar demos to fully realised pop performances on stage. Beautiful respects the songwriting process and reveals it magically, in a moving, entertaining artist biography that offers real depth and insight into the life of one of modern music’s most talented and influential figures.
Beautiful – The Carole King Musical will play its final West End performance on 5th August 2017 before embarking on a UK tour. Don’t miss this celebration of one of the world’s most famous songwriters!
We recommend patrons arrive at least 15mins in advance of the show start time.
Security checks will be carried out upon arrival at the theatre, please be aware that your bags will need to be checked before being seated.
What's the story?
Beautiful opens with Carole King playing a sold-out Carnegie Hall concert in the early Seventies, then flashes back to her days as a gifted college freshman in Brooklyn.
Her careworn mother wants her to be a teacher but Carole has other plans. She sells her first song to upcoming pop mogul Don Kirshner and becomes a regular feature at his Aldon Music studio, one of the crucial centres of the unfolding Sixties pop business. There she meets Gerry Goffin, who becomes her husband and songwriting partner.
Goffin and King quickly establish themselves as a red-hot team, scoring huge hits with Will You Love Me Tomorrow, The Loco-Motion and many more. But their youth and success take a toll on their marriage, leaving Carole with two daughters, a new life in the hip songwriters' enclave of Laurel Canyon, and a single-minded determination to prove herself as a solo performer with her album, Tapestry.
